The Best Monitor I've Ever Owned

The Best Monitor I've Ever Owned
I wasn't quite sure I'd like the curved screen, but it took me almost no time to get used to it. Now when I use my laptop or someone else's computer, I feel like I'm missing out. I use the monitor mostly for photo editing mostly with Lightroom and a little with Photoshop. The extra real estate makes a big difference and the color rendition is very good. Straight out of the box it was nearly perfectly calibrated. It may very well have been correctly calibrated in the factory, but my calibration tool (Datacolor Spyder4) takes into account the ambient light of the room and adjusts it accordingly. It shows more than 100% of sRGB, and 79% of the AdobeRGB missing only a little of the green portion of the spectrum (blue and red are covered completely). I've attached a picture of the graph. I use is secondarily for gaming. Coming from a 1080p monitor, there are a lot more pixels to render. I have a GeForce GTX760 that does just ok. I have to lower the rendering quality of the games at full resolution. Also, just to be aware, this monitor is 60hz, so there is no reason to run games above 60 fps. Lastly, while I'm on this note, it uses FreeSync for games to match the frame rate and refresh rate. FreeSync is compatible with AMD's Radeon GPU's and NOT with Nvidia GeForce GPU's. Just to be clear, the monitor will run with an Nvidia GPU (that's what I'm using right now), it's just the FreeSync capability that won't be utilized. That may or may not be very important to you. I never used the stand that came with it. It looks to be a decent stand, but I preferred to mount it directly to the wall to free up the desk space under the monitor. You can see the attached picture. The only gripe that I have is with their software. There is an included program that allows you to have various options for how open windows will snap to a selected layout. I typically use one that splits the screen with one window being about 2/3 the width and the other being about 1/3. There's about 12 different options for layouts, but the one thing I wish I could do would be to have a hot key that I could hold down and have the window ignore the layout. I used to like being able to have my calculator out on top of a window and size it and position it where ever I would like. With their software, that's not possible. When I use the calculator it's huge because the program snaps it to the layout. This is such a small inconvenience that I didn't take off any stars for it. In the end this monitor has exceeded my expectations for it and is the best monitor I've ever owned.

I purchased this monitor for a gaming PC on which I sometimes do work as well.

First impressions of this monitor - incredible. The colors are rich and, for a large IPS panel, the contrast ratio is pretty good. QC on this monitor was excellent - backlight bleed is minimal, and limited to the corners in very dark scenes. No dead or stuck pixels.

This monitor supports FreeSync, and since modern games are getting more and more demanding and the high resolution of this monitor, I am seriously considering buying an AMD card to support that functionality. However, I am currently running an Nvidia 980 Ti, which only supports G-Sync, so I cannot evaluate that feature yet.

The curve is surprisingly unobtrusive. When sitting with the monitor properly centered, it feels very natural, and ultrawide flat screens seem like the corners are too far away in comparison. When viewing panoramic scenes the curve really helps to fill some of your peripheral vision and improves the immersion.

For productivity, this monitor is incredible. It's easy to fit two separate things side-by-side without any program feeling cramped.

Gaming, however, is where this monitor shines. Response time feels quite good and 75hz support is a nice addition. To enable 75hz, you must enable FreeSync on the monitor (even if you're not using a freesync-capable GPU). Games feel immersive and landscapes come alive with the extra real estate. Final Fantasy XIV has great ultrawide support and is where I've spent most of my time with this monitor. Ultrawide is a pretty big advantage in difficult content, in many instances I can zoom out and see the entire fight easily, improving awareness.

Do be aware that not all games support 21:9. Overwatch, for example, is a notable omission in this space and the game feels quite cramped with black bars on either side of the screen.

With this monitor I had replaced 27" apple cinema display. It works like a charm and to me it is a great deal for fellow mac users out there.
Before writing this review I had used the monitor for five days.

      My setup:
      1. Mac Book Pro, connected via HDMI and downstream USB. The keyboard I am using now is a standard USB Mac keyboard connected to the monitor USB hub. The trackball wireless receiver is plugged in one of the keyboard USB ports.
      2. Macbook connected using TNP HDMI / USB / Charge hub. (same peripherals as "set up 1" )

      Monitor settings:
Picture Mode = "Reader" - gives very warm, non oversaturated colors.
Brightness = "20%" - the monitor is very bright and 20% provides me more than enough light. In fact I feel it a bit to bright.
Speakers = "20%" - I did even know it had speakers. When I plugged it to my mac book it automatically switched the sound to the monitor,
No other settings were adjusted or changed.

      Pros:
      1. Lighter and more ergonomic than the 27" apple cinema display. Ultra wide is much much more ergonomic, compared to two monitors.
      2. Excellent EXCELLENT picture: to me its better than the apple I had before. Text sharpness, colors and light are great and uniform from corner to corner.
      3. Surprisingly good sound: Automatically switched the sound to the monitor speakers and because they are so far apart the stereo effect is good and the overall experience is good too.
      4. The single configuration button: To me it is minimalistic and well thought. It is evident somebody spent time thinking about it.
      5. The stand has springs calibrated to the monitor weight. Tilting, rotating and moving up and down is a breeze

      Cons:
      1. PIP doesn't allow me to use the two HDMI inputs. Just Display Port and one of the HDMIs.
      2. When the monitor goes to sleep the USB hub goes out too so I cannot wake my mac by just touching a trackball or a key. Instead I have to click the single monitor configuration button to wake it up. I phrase it as a "cons" because it requires me to change habits. There could be a setting perhaps to allow a wake via the USB but who cares.

its great and why did I wait so long get this? the only complaint is the stand, it curves towards you and interferes with the keyboard... dumb design but other than that terrific... i did contact their customer service with a question... they were very rude, gave me no answer, he said just return it to Amazon? Wow!!! Well I figured out how to stop the onscreen messages and didn't return it, I wish LG investigate that call centre and the horrible customer service
