About the Author

CrisMarie Campbell and Susan Clarke are the founders of Thrive!—a coaching and consulting firm that specializes in helping individuals, leaders, teams and entire companies learn how to deal with differences to ignite creativity and innovation. They have a proven, step-by-step process for making teams great—a process they’ve honed working with hundreds of leaders and their teams for over 25 years.

CrisMarie’s immersion in team dynamics started early. As an Olympic and World Champion rower, she learned first-hand what makes a championship team versus simply a team of champions. She launched her career as an engineer at Boeing, where she helped initiate a groundbreaking, cross-functional team approach for how the company designs and builds airplanes. Next, CrisMarie earned her MBA and a position as a Manager at Arthur Andersen, where she coached executive business leaders around the country on the secrets to making big changes stick in their organizations. Then, as a member of Five Dysfunctions of a Team author Patrick Lencioni’s elite consulting team The Table Group, she honed her ability to turn a team around in two days flat.

Susan Clarke was also part of the Team at The Table Group. She stepped into the leadership role of her life at the age of 24, when doctors gave her just six months to live. Determined to prove them wrong, she built her own “Dream Team,” identifying a diverse group of smart health-care professionals and rallying them to work together to save her life. She then spent the next 20 years building on that success, earning her BS and then MA in education and honing her skills as a facilitator, educator and coach. Susan went on to lead transformational programs at the Haven, the prestigious professional development center in BC, Canada; facilitate in native communities, and coach “stalled” corporate executives and teams around the globe.

15 years ago, Susan and CrisMarie joined forces in both business and life. They launched Thrive! with a mission—to help individuals and teams develop their leadership skills, increasing their influence, vitality [aka mojo] and momentum for creating the changes they want to see and experience in their work and lives.     This was an eye-opening look into what makes a team productive & innovative and deeply looks at the ways at both our own worldview and the way we relate to others impacts the ability for a team to function well. There were so many moments I recognized in reading the real-word examples - and more than once I wished I had read this book years ago, and saved myself and my team from likely avoidable failures. The book explores how leaning into conflict counter-intuitively brings out the best in a team both from a results and relationship perspective. It's applicable to anyone working on a team - critical for both ICs and managers to read. We'd have a very different corporate culture if leadership at all levels read, absorbed and lived the guidance that this book provides.     This book helped give me and my team the language of healthy conflict, its importance, and a way to navigate it in order to lead to leaps of innovation. We read it as part of our team's book club and we were all such enthusiast readers and fans that we've gotten other people in the company to read it as well. Susan and CrisMarie's approach is relatively simple in design but profound in impact. It's definitely something you should read if you want to help you co-workers and yourself transform into a more productive, engaged, and trusting team.

    This is an excellent book to give to everyone on your team. I love that the basic premise is the understanding that conflict is normal, even necessary for the vitality of an organization, partnership, and the individuals that make up the “team.” The book gives clear examples and personal stories to explore a variety of conflict situations, and helps us understand how conflict happens, how to be present and authentic and vulnerable (with strength) in the face of it, to reach resolution.

    I work in the public schools and have been married for years, thus am certainly not immune to conflict. While most of the real-life examples in this book are set in private companies, the material is definitely applicable in my life too. Plus it reads like a novel with crisp, clear dialogue and is well-structured and fascinating. Now that I have sped through my first reading, I am looking forward to applying the expert advice and having this valuable resource nearby.

    We’ve all been there, experienced clashes, conflict, tension, discomfort and dysfunction. And those of us considered successful have learned to manage those situations. CrisMarie and Susan take us a quantum leap beyond just managing situations, by providing practical tools that help us embrace, even encourage, conflict as a sustainable power source for success.

    CrisMarie and Susan map their models and process through conversation-style descriptions of real meetings and business situations – it feels like I’m in the room, and in many cases déjà vu! It’s fast-paced, clearly illustrated and well-organized. It delivers on its promise.

    In my work with people, that's EVERY body from family to colleagues to clients, friends, buyers, sellers, dog walkers, cyclists, fishermen...okay, you get the drift...I have suffered the agonies of conflict. This book gives me tools to turn stumbling blocks into building blocks. I may not be keen to embrace conflict and still, I'm going to meet it many times in my life. Good to have a little help in handling it, and myself!
