- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2019Although the focus of this book is teaching one how to deal with career burnout, it offers sound advice that can also be used as a guide when burnout is experienced in other parts of life. Most of us experience that powerless, exhausted feeling at some point. This book reminds us that when we take charge of our lives and work towards positive change, our mindset can change. With that mindset change, our outlook in all areas of our life can change. Positive self talk and reinforcement of positive habits all serve well to change mindset in a positive direction. In his book, Rex provides us with a guide, complete with extra tips and references, that can help us work towards that change. While none of his suggestions are overly profound and most are things that we probably already know, these are concepts that we tend to overlook in our daily lives. That’s what makes this such a helpful book. It puts these concepts in front of us in one easily read reference. It helps us figure out how to create a plan of action fueled by motivation, self-care, and self-discipline. So start reading and work the steps to create a positive change. As Rex reminds us, there is no better time to start than today!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2019Lots of motivational and self-help books are packed with helpful tips, but few are written so conversationally and honestly. Rex Baker is quite candid about how burnout from the television news business he once loved wore him down, just as he is especially forthright about how educators, pastors, therapists like him (he does all three in his position as executive director of Gateway Rescue Mission of Jackson, Mississippi) can feel, over time, like the hamster running endlessly on the wheel, the joy and passion slowly but inexorably vanishing from what was once a calling.
Rex makes no promises about the new you and your future, but he makes some great suggestions: Think about who you want to be and what you want to be doing with your life, set realistic goals, start new hobbies, make new friends, surround yourself with people who support you and ease out of your life the people that don’t, commit yourself to reading to broaden your mind, and—most of all—be disciplined when you take on anything new, whether a simple hobby or a career change. In addition to tips throughout the book, there’s an impressive reading list you’ll want to dig into at the end.
You’ve certainly spent two hours watching a bad movie or sporting event and wished you could have it back. The two hours you’ll spend reading this motivational work will be time especially well spent and just might change your life. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2019I am not normally a reader, but this topic is timely for myself and many people ! I found this book to be full of wisdom and great advice on dealing with burnout. Its a very easy reading book and whole not a reader, I finished in a day of off and on reading. Upon completion, I feel energized and ready to start afresh in my job. I had reached a point of not reading caring and that was a bad place to be. Thanks to Rex Baker and this book, I'm ready to tackle the next season of my career by refocusing! I will ver purchasing multiple copies to gift to friends who feeling burnout.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2019With 30 years in corporate leadership (the last 5 in HR/Talent/Learning), I have seen (and experienced) the devastating effects of burnout, with business and societal pressures continue to exacerbate the underlying causes. Baker's straightforward approach looks beyond the "it's them", inviting the reader to look within themselves for the empowerment necessary to breakout of old habits that no longer server their higher calling. Based on sound self leadership principles Rex presents this topic in a humanistic and conversational manner more like a cup of coffee with an old friend, than an academic lecture. An easy and enjoyable read that challenges the reader to to take small steps that will have a big impact.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2019When I began reading this book I thought I understood burnout. Personally I have recently identified for myself that I am not being fulfilled in my career and personal life and have begun to implement many of the strategies the author lists in his book. What I did not understand until I read the book was that I was actually suffering from burnout and the contributing factors. I also learned from his book how I got to this point.
I found the book easy to read. I intended to read a few chapters this evening and didn't stop until I was finished. I really liked how the author was easy to understand and follow. I liked that he presented various scenarios and multiple options of achieving the same outcome.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with burnout or even just looking for a change in life.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2019As someone who has struggled through burnout before, I recognized a lot of hard-won wisdom in this book. Rex is a great writer, conversational, easy to read, and a caring coach for all who are looking for advice on how to break free from self destructive cycles of behavior. I'm glad I read this book! Even though I'm not in burnout now, I found some great advice I plan to implement even now, before the burnout monster rears its ugly head again. Thanks Rex for using your story to inspire others!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2019I wish I would have read this book 2 years ago. And I would have realized my problem was not my employment but myself. I was burned out. This is a fresh perspective on an age-old problem. Mr. Baker provided thought-provoking reading and doesn’t leave you hanging with what to do next he offers his readers doable suggestions on how to either avoid burnout or how to re-energize yourself. One of the suggestions is to start reading the right books. Well, I say add this book to your list of reading. It is a quick and easy book to read with personal antidotes on what has worked for him – I never felt like I was being told how “stupid” I am because I was burned out. Instead, I felt like I was listening to a friend offering wise suggestions
