“[Dianetics is] a new science which works with the invariability of physical science in the field of the human mind. From all indications it will prove to be as revolutionary for humanity as the first caveman’s discovery and utilization of fire.” (Daily Mirror)

The word Dianetics is derived from the Greek dia, meaning “through,” and nous, “mind or soul.” Dianetics is further defined as “what the soul is doing to the body.”
Dianetics is a methodology which can help alleviate unwanted sensations and emotions, irrational fears and psychosomatic illnesses (illnesses caused or aggravated by mental stress). It is most accurately described as what the soul is doing to the body through the mind.
A MASSIVE GAME-CHANGER
“I am now able to understand myself and the reason I have specific thoughts. This has been a massive game–changer for me. Dianetics has helped me to be hopeful and to believe in myself. I could not have made so much improvement and progress in my life otherwise. Dianetics is life-saving. It helps people to know themselves and gives them the tools to push themselves to become the best possible version of themselves.”
A WHOLE NEW LIGHT
“I view interacting with people in a whole new light. Before, a conversation was black and white and now conversations are in color with more depth. Recently I have received such comments as, ‘You are more calm,’ and ‘I can see and feel you are in a good place when I am around you.’ This change resulted from Dianetics and continuing to apply it to my daily life.”
I’M IN CONTROL
"I was successful in life yet I still felt empty on the inside. I went to many experts to try and handle the problem I was experiencing and no one could find the source of the problem that was weighing me down. I was at the end of my rope and desperately needed answers. With Dianetics, I found the answers and I was able to own myself again. I’ve been in full control since, much happier than I’ve ever been and I don’t feel so empty anymore."

About the author

With 19 New York Times bestsellers and more than 350 million copies of his works in circulation, L. Ron Hubbard is among the most enduring and widely read authors of our time. As a leading light of American Pulp Fiction through the 1930s and '40s, he is further among the most influential authors of the modern age. Indeed, from Ray Bradbury to Stephen King, there is scarcely a master of imaginative tales who has not paid tribute to L. Ron Hubbard.
Then too, of course, there is all L. Ron Hubbard represents as the Founder of Dianetics and Scientology and thus the only major religion born in the 20th century.
While, as such, he presents the culmination of science and spiritual technology as embodied in the religion of Scientology.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2025I read this book once when I got it, and found it answered a lot of questions about life. It helped me understand myself more than anything I've ever read. It was so helpful, that I read it a second time and got even more out of it. I highly recommend reading this book, it just puts in sanity and stability.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2017I first read this book back in the 1970's, so I could be informed about Scientology's claims, in Hubbard's own words,
without having to pay for expensive auditing sessions, or having to connect personally with a member.
I read a lot of books: Bible, Swedenborg, Cayce, Theosophical, Book of Mormon (tried), Gibran, Freud, Jung, Hitler, etc.
And got involved in person with many groups: protestants (growing up), Mormons, yogis, NSA Buddhists, etc.
Not all of this was time well-spent, but it does mean that
I can claim some credentials for comparing Scientology with the world at large.
I recently bought this update version of Dianetics and reread it, so my thoughts are now fresh.
The fundamental claim of Dianetics is the existence of destructive and crippling mental "engrams",
that have invaded and lodged into our psyches since birth (and allegedly since conception),
due to random events happening to us (abuse, accidents, trauma, surgery),
and which continue to cripple our behavior until they are removed through Dianetic-style auditing sessions.
The precept strikes me as a valid concept, and its removal techniques seem (at worst) benign.
It proposes a very simple form of mental therapy which, if effective, would be a welcome addition to society
But the extent to which Hubbard ascribes the power, quantity and quality of these engrams
begins to border on the bizarre as the book proceeds.
The tipping point for me was when he talked repeatedly about very young fetuses in the womb
"hearing" abusive/angry speech from the outside world and mentally recording it so accurately,
that the same exact words are later subconsciously recognized all through adult life,
causing all of the trauma of the original experience to be revisited each time.
Thus, English syllables heard underwater, by a barely-formed fetus, are precisely recorded.
Dianetic auditing is said to remove these engrams.
The rest of the story (not in the book) - Hubbard's origins as a science fiction writer,
the well-documented stories of severe abuse towards Scientology "apostates",
and Hubbard's ultra-bizarre mythology about "Xenu" - can be found on-line,
and need not be discussed here, but should be known when you read this book.
I still consider Hubbard's basic engram concept as worthy of (unbiased) research,
just as I consider some of Hitler's ideas in "Mein Kampf" to be worth thinking about.
I recommend both books to those who would be well-informed.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2009My aim is to make this review as unbiased as possible, so if you're looking for mentions of Xenu (Xemu), OT levels, Tom Cruise or discrediting LRH merely because he was a SF writer, look elsewhere.
THE SLAP IN THE FACE
Dianetics does not get off to a good start.
Turn the pages a few times and you come to an IMPORTANT NOTE that basically says, "don't read any further if you haven't understood everything up to this point."
Below that note is mention of a GLOSSARY, not just a small one, either. This one is about 100 pages long. This glossary is supposed to help you with words you might not know. However, in the text itself, there is no indication of whether a word is defined in the glossary or not.
In short, you will probably find yourself flipping back to the glossary pretty often. Not a fun way of reading.
What's even more ridiculous is that the glossary, while it does contain some difficult words, also contains such everyday terms as "ball", "fair" and "wisdom teeth".
Now here's an interesting fact: The SYNOPSIS is only 11 pages. In those 11 pages are ~78 words that can be found in the glossary, an average of 7 words a page! Of those 78 words, 16 of them were Dianetic terms, averaging one new Dianetic word a page.
Turn the pages a few more times and you come to a section titled HOW TO READ THIS BOOK. Makes you feel small and stupid, doesn't it?
INTERESTING THOUGHTS
There are many interesting thoughts in this book. How survival is what motivates all living things. How your engrams can control you if they become restimulated. Why talking around the "unconscious" is dangerous. How the ability to remember everything relates to sanity.
Dianetics is interested in getting rid of these engrams (moments of "unconsciousness") and supposedly by getting rid of them your whole body benefits and you'll probably even get a boost in IQ.
One must keep in mind that this book was written in 1950, so some of Hubbard's analogies are not as good as they could be. For myself, it seemed like he was saying that the human mind is a FRAGMENTED HARDDRIVE (like on your Windows PC at home).
Engrams are the fragments, scattered here and there. And just like your PC at home, a fragmented mind is not operating at full capacity.
By following Dianetic therapy with an auditor, you are essentially DEFRAGMENTING your mind.
As I found out, this is actually a very good analogy, as the founder of Executive Software/Diskeeper Corporation is Craig Jensen, a Scientologist. What does this company make. Diskeeper, a harddrive defragmenting tool!
Defragmenting your mind sounds pretty interesting, doesn't it? There's just one problem . . .
SCIENTIFIC FACTS
As I read this book, I noticed that LRH was fond of the following phrase "It is a scientific fact". At last count, I noted ~23 uses of "scientific fact" in the whole book.
First off, I think one has to understand what LRH's definition of a "scientific fact" is. The answer lies on page 157, halfway down the page . . .
"The only test is whether or not a fact works. If it does work and can be used, it is a scientific fact."
What's missing here is that his "scientific facts" apparently don't have to be OBSERVABLE or DOCUMENTED. As you read this book, how many X-Rays do you see comparing the mind of a Preclear with that of a Clear?
ZERO.
How many photocopies of case histories of past auditing sessions do you find in this book?
ZERO.
How do you prove with physical, tangible evidence that engrams exist?
I have no idea . . .
And for me, that's why Dianetics falls flat on its face. This book has some interesting ideas (ideas that may even be partially or entirely correct!), but without any hard evidence it's hard to see how anyone can take the bait.
THE MYSTERY
Like I said at the beginning of my review, I'm not here to talk about Xenu or the other common attacks on Scientology. However, any average person would probably ask the following question about something that is in the glossary zero times and in the index zero times . . .
What is up with the VOLCANO on the cover of the book and what does it have to do with Dianetics (besides being pretty cool cover art)???
If your copy of the Holy Bible had a picture of a box of Kleenex on the cover, wouldn't you wonder how it relates to Christianity?
If your copy of the Quran had a picture of a Walruss on the cover, wouldn't you wonder how it ties in?
Like LRH's "scientific facts" there are some things that are just not explained, and to me, that's creepy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A world without insanity
Dianetics Removes all of someone’s pain from their entire lifetime.
Provides a perspective on Life unlike any other.
Dianetics is a method of erasing all the pain out of a persons lifetime.
You can understand that if a person didn’t have any pain in his lifetime, he’d be a fairly happy person wouldn’t he? Well in Dianetics you just erase all the pain out of his lifetime and he’s well.
I think of it in simple terms: you can convert the pain of a lifetime to happiness and sanity.
A Validated method of increasing sanity and intelligence quotient.
Dianetics has increased my entire perspective on Life, why people are stupid and why people have so many severe mental illnesses. I’ve seen engrams of my father being dramatized, realized why my sister is constantly sick and why she screams. I’ve found a solution to increase my intelligence, knowingness (what I called wisdom) and a new technology which I can apply to help others to become smarter, more rational and healthy. I could go on and on about all the discoveries I’ve gained through Dianetics.
Dianetics has helped bring awareness to my surroundings. I also look better at work because I'm more in action instead of in apathy (like some coworkers), so it got me promoted (I got promoted 7 times in 4 months).
It helped me to understand people I didn't understand (I used to think they are just stupid). It gave me the reasons why I was acting irrational in certain situations, because I understand where these irrationalities are coming from. Instead of just letting these irrationalities surface, knowing about their solutions taught me to control my reactions and use what I’ve learned.
I finally found a Proven solution where I can make a difference in my life and I want to start using it more in my life to further improve things and improve the people around me.
A proven technology not requiring Faith, unlike unproven psychology and psychiatry.
Being a devout Christian, Dianetics re-affirmed the New Testament and shows why ideologies like Islam and communism cause their people to apostasy, running and clawing out of the depression of a totalitarian system built on violence and media deception to their citizens, how it fails by the death of people under it. Terror and Deception by a government only creates death. Dianetics may not mention any ideologies specifically, but through the “science of mind”, explains the inner workings and reasons why people do what they do and what causes an individual to do so.

Quand on pense que ce que LRH dit dans ce livre en 1950, on y vient seulement maintenant... si vous voulez savoir pourquoi le monde ne tourne pas rond, lisez ce livre.
