- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2024How is it that I am 31 years old and only now reading this? What seems most refreshing about this book, despite its age, is the refinement of ideas that clearly endure. We find ideas as ancient and enduring as those found in The Bible and the philosophy of Stoicism and as contemporary as the understanding that stress and anxiety reak havoc on the body (though it should be noted the “Thought and its effect on the body” chapter should be taken with a grain of salt. There is an effortless and seamless synthesis of principles that account for a wide variety of perspectives on happiness, peace, and success. It is unfortunate that it is written in a way that portrays a “masculine” point of reference, but if one can instead think of the phrase “a man” as a collective of our species, as in ‘huMANity’ then this book is truly for everyone.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2023This books hails broadly from the genre of positive thinking along with Think and Grow Rich, The Power of the Subconscious Mind etc, but it has two positive qualities over those two books in particular. One is that it doesn’t have a creeping reverence for money the way those two tend to (despite their protestations to the contrary). Clearly they were speaking to an audience whose overriding motivation was to get wealthier monetarily. Secondly it doesn’t make too much of the power of thought over physical circumstances - the sort of miracle faith healing ideas that dominate The Power of the Subconscious Mind. Such ideas seem de rigour in books with a strong christian religious leaning because one must justify the supposed miracles of Christ. But in this book there is no such compunction and the author is happy to limit the effects of thought to first and foremost the positive or negative experience one has of life, and secondly to the circumstances that ripple out from such states of mind.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIn today's world, a reminder that a man is only as good as his attitude is a useful, and applicable concept.
One unique and unforseen quality of this book, is the outdated verbiage. Initially, this was kind of annoying and time consuming to comprehend what I'd just read - after all, I'm just as busy as any other young adult trying to build a career. I found that the extra effort required to grasp each concept (i.e. Read. Re-read, rinse/lather/repeat) gave roots to many of the concepts as described. Has been at least a year since I last picked up this book, yet the whole of construct remains.
Definitely recommend for us driven types, as our most prodigious critic tends to be ourselves. A little positive thinking will, more often than not, provide the shift in perspective and attitude you didn't know you needed.
