About the author

London-based interiors expert Joanna Thornhill's work spans commercial styling and creative direction for brands, writing and compiling design, craft and how-to articles and features for magazines, curating monthly trend reports for global forecasting agency WGSN and latterly moving into teaching and content creation, working as a regular Guest Lecturer at the KLC School of Design as well as creating ad-hoc courses and workshops for clients and her own platforms. She also offers strategic style advice for both brands and homeowners or renters, offering ways to pick her brains or access her remote styling services, to empower them to make their own informed choices.
Her accessible approach to interiors, and passion for educating her audience in how to harness the power of design to support their wellbeing, has led to the commission of her four interiors books over the last decade, which regularly feature in Amazon's top 100 within the interiors sector:
- Interior Design Masters (Quadrille Books, 2023)
In association with the BBC1 TV series of the same name, this tie-in book is offers a comprehensive guide on everything you need to know when planning to decorate your home, with a focus on creative workarounds and inventive solutions for those on a budget. It contains beautifully illustrated roomsets and projects based on those featured on the show, alongside quotes and advice from the design contestants, guest judges and art department team who contributed across each series.
- The New Mindful Home (Laurence King Publishing, 2021)
Breaking down the ways our home (and the colours, shapes, materials and accessories we bring into it) can help support our overall wellbeing, this book delves into the science of why certain spaces affect our mood in particular ways, and how we can use this to our advantage when decorating. Touching on topics ranging from minimalism and feng shui to the NASA-proven ways plants can help lower our blood pressure, each talking point is well researched and full of actionable ideas.
- My Bedroom is an Office and other Interior Design Dilemmas (Laurence King Publishing, 2019)
Part coffee table book, part reference guide, My Bedroom poses a number of pertinent design dilemmas, including what to do if your workspace IS in a corner of your bedroom, along with other common questions, such as whether to go open-plan, to how you can bring in an industrial warehouse aesthetic when you live in a suburban semi. Each spread is standalone, focusing on one question and its possible solutions, making it very easy to dip in and out of.
- Home For Now (CICO Books 2014, re-released as Insta Style for your Living Space, 2018)
Aimed at renters and first-time buyers who are limited by budget or the restrictions of their landlord, this book offers thrifty, creative and out-of-the-box decorating ideas, encouraging those in a stepping-stone home to see the advantages this can bring and have a little fun. Packed with styling ideas and simple makes, it proves an invaluable read for anyone looking to set up a new home.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2021Format: FlexiboundVerified PurchaseThis is the best book I have found for apartment dwellers and first time home owners. It provides practical solutions that don’t require you to spend a fortune. If you are looking for a high end design book, this is not it. But if you want advice on how to make your house a home, you will love this book. I thought I would be disappointed that it wasn’t hardcover, but it is brilliantly flexibound to make it easier to look through. Images are beautifully eclectic. I seriously want to live in every page.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2020Format: FlexiboundVerified PurchaseI'm a designer, so I enjoy looking through beautiful and informative interior design books. This one is nothing great! The pictures are not beautiful and the suggestions are nothing new. Save your money! There are better design books out there.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2019Format: FlexiboundThe title "My bedroom is my office" already gives a hint about the content of this well laid out book. It provides practical and inspirational answers to many common interior decorating questions for tricky areas that are applicable for both new homeowners that start with a blank canvas as for people who want to create a more welcoming atmosphere in their living spaces. Moreover, as a home staging teacher, I can recommend this book as a must-read for sellers and home stagers too because it will provide them with many ideas for issues that so many properties have: Lack of texture, color, and layers to make bland rooms interesting for home buyers.
I had the opportunity too read this book as an educator to provide feedback to the author. However, it is my own, honest opinion.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2020Format: FlexiboundVerified PurchaseThis book was smaller than I realized - so not great for table top - but fun with great photos and information/ideas. People have enjoyed flipping through it - so maybe the smaller size is good! No one looks at the giant coffee table top book I have...
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2020Format: FlexiboundVerified PurchaseHelpful info and ideas, I feel like this is ideal for someone who is really new to interior design for their home, probably less helpful for a avid pinterest/hgtv viewer
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2019Format: FlexiboundMy Bedroom is an Office by Joanna Thornhill is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in early March.
Q & A chapter format that focusing a reader to make informed design choices for their home, seeing past a permanent fixture/element in order to draw the eye away, reacting and improvising to a sudden need (i.e. a new baby, unexpected damage), customizing bland objects, and creating a cohesive theme. There were also better-than-magazine quality pictures of rooms, as well as tips and references to other helpful chapters & concepts. For me, it was at its best when it was inspiring me about organizing and making non-invasive improvements to a rental property.
