Pgp: Source Code and Internals

5.0 out of 5 stars 4 ratings

PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) is a computer program for the encryption of data and electronic mail, which allows individuals the same privacy in their communications as that enjoyed by governments and large corporations. PGP, which is freely available on the Internet, uses public-key cryptography, which is particularly well-suited to the needs of computer-mediated communications. This volume contains a formatted version of the complete source code for the latest release (2.6.2) of PGP. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.

5.0 out of 5 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars A speciality book for those interseted in Encription implementation in software
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 5, 2012
This book has an interesting history as Philip Zimmermann wrote an application called "Pretty Good Privacy" (PGP). This encryption proved to be so good that when published on the internet was withdrawn and export banned at the request of the US government as the encription was so good that at the time it bettered the military encryption methods. The bizarre part about this was that although banned from publishing and exporting the code, it was not an offence to publish the code in book form and place it on sale, which is how I obtained it. For anyone like me interested in the algorithms employed, this book satisfies much of that curiosity. There are ongoing problems with licensing regarding the similarity to the RSA alorithm used. These do not apply in the UK as a similar method had been used by the security services (MI5/6) in the previous decade and had been published therefore the licensing had effectively been torpedoed. The US export ban was too late for the app to be available in Europe as the genie was already out of the bottle.
