Since its first publication in 1960, Maxwell Maltz’s landmark bestseller has inspired and enhanced the lives of more than 30 million readers!

In this updated edition, with a new introduction and editorial commentary by Matt Furey, president of the Psycho-Cybernetics Foundation, the original text has been annotated and amplified to make Maltz’s message even more relevant for the contemporary reader.

• Cybernetics (loosely translated from the Greek): “a helmsman who steers his ship to port.”
• Psycho-Cybernetics is a term coined by Dr. Maxwell Maltz, which means, “steering your mind to a productive, useful goal so you can reach the greatest port in the world, peace of mind.”

Maltz was the first researcher and author to explain how the self-image (a term he popularized) has complete control over an individual’s ability to achieve (or fail to achieve) any goal. And he developed techniques for improving and managing that self-image—visualization, mental rehearsal, relaxation—which have informed and inspired countless motivational gurus, sports psychologists, and self-help practitioners for more than fifty years.

Timeless teachings based on solid science, Psycho-Cybernetics provide a prescription for thinking and acting that lead to quantifiable results.

Review

Reviews of Maxwell Maltz’'s original Psycho-Cybernetics:

“Psycho-Cybernetics is a classic personal development book. Most of the current speakers in the area of personal development, including Zig Ziglar, Tony Robbins, Brian Tracy and others owe a debt to Maxwell Maltz for the foundation of their material. The psychological training of Olympic athletes is also based on the concepts in Psycho-Cybernetics. Thousands, possibly millions, of people have benefited by putting these ideas to work. Put
Psycho-Cybernetics on your ‘"must-read’" list.”--Michael C. Gray, Profit Advisors

“Published in 1960,
Psycho-Cybernetics remains one the classics of self-help, self-improvement, and personal development.”--Mind of Success

“An invaluable aid to the layman, offering a sound, scientific method of practical self-improvement.”--
Mark Freeman, Ph.D., clinical psychologist

“This classic by Maxwell Maltz is considered by many experts in the field to be the grandfather of all self-help books. Although it was written in 1960,
Psycho-Cybernetics is just as relevant more than 50 years later. His timeless tenets offer a road map for self-image improvement and better quality of life.”--Gayot.com

“Maxwell Maltz, author of
Psycho-Cybernetics, was an early exponent of the visualization principle. Almost half a century ago, he captures a truth that can literally transform the way we think, act, and communicate.”--Bert Decker, You’ve Got to Be Believed to Be Heard

Psycho-Cybernetics has sold in its millions because it provides a scientific rationale for dream fulfillment. The science and computing references are now outdated, but the principles of cybernetics have only grown in influence. Complexity theory, artificial intelligence, and cognitive science all grew out if the cybernetic understanding of how the non-physical, the ‘“ghost in the machine,’” guides matter. This makes Psycho-Cybernetics the perfect self-help book for a technical culture.”--Tom Butler-Bowdon, 50 Self-Help Classics

Psycho-Cybernetics was written back in 1960, but it was way ahead of its time. Maxwell Maltz was a successful plastic surgeon in the States, and he was puzzled by the attitudes of some of his patients whose plastic surgery was successful, but they still felt ugly inside. This book explores the psychology of self-image, and its profound effects on all our lives. But Maxwell Maltz goes further, and sets out an action plan to change your self-image from a disempowering one to an empowering one. Ever wondered how some people seem effortlessly successful, wealthy, fit and healthy, while others struggle and seem to get nowhere? The answers lie in the concepts set out in this book: the self-image, the subconscious mind, the power of visualization, relaxed concentration, goal-setting.”--Fitness4London

About the Author

Dr. Maxwell Maltz received his doctorate in medicine from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in 1923. After postgraduate work in plastic surgery in Europe, Maltz was appointed to head several departments of reparative surgery in New York hospitals over his long and distinguished career. He was a prominent international lecturer and on the psychological aspects of plastic surgery. He published two books on the subject, New Faces, New Futures and Dr. Pygmalion.

In the 1950s, Maltz became increasingly fascinated by the number of patients who came to him requesting surgery, who had greatly exaggerated “mental pictures” of their physical deformities, and whose unhappiness and insecurities remained unchanged even after he gave them the new faces they desired. In 1960, after nearly a decade of counseling hundreds of such patients, extensive research, and testing his evolving theory of “success conditioning” on athletes, salespeople, and others, he published his findings—then radical ideas—in the first edition of
Psycho-Cybernetics, which went on to sell millions of copies and to be translated in dozens of languages.

Matt Furey, president of the Psycho-Cybernetics Foundation, a national and world title-holder in wrestling and martial arts, a bestselling fitness author as well as successful internet entrepreneur, has committed himself to preserving and extending the legacy of Maltz’s work. Furey headlines sold-out seminars and coaches hundreds of men and women in his highly successful MasterMind/Joint Venture Connection, as well as the Psycho-Cybernetics Coaching Program.

Terrific read. The principles in this book are life changing.

I recently read "Psycho-Cybernetics: Updated and Expanded" by Maxwell Maltz, and I can honestly say it’s one of the most impactful self-help books I’ve ever encountered. Originally published in the 1960s, this updated version brings the timeless principles of self-image psychology into the modern era, and it’s as relevant today as it was when first written.

The core of the book is centered around the concept that our self-image shapes our reality. Maltz, a pioneering plastic surgeon, observed that many of his patients, despite undergoing physical transformations, often struggled with low self-esteem or a poor self-image that wasn’t addressed by surgery. This led him to explore the powerful connection between mind and body, and he coined the term "psycho-cybernetics" to describe the process of reprogramming the subconscious mind to achieve greater success and happiness.

What makes this book so compelling is that it’s not just theory—it’s practical and actionable. Maltz provides clear techniques, visualizations, and exercises to help you identify and change limiting beliefs, build a positive self-image, and unlock your full potential. The “updated and expanded” version includes new insights, research, and additional exercises that bring even more value to the original material.

One of the key takeaways for me was learning how to reframe my thinking and stop sabotaging my own success due to negative self-talk. The emphasis on visualization and the idea of "success as a process" instead of an end goal really resonated with me. Since reading the book, I’ve noticed a more positive outlook on challenges and greater self-confidence in both my personal and professional life.

If you're looking to make lasting changes in your mindset and achieve your goals, "Psycho-Cybernetics: Updated and Expanded" is an essential read. It’s practical, insightful, and transformative—offering valuable tools that can help you reshape your self-image and create the life you want. Highly recommended for anyone serious about personal growth and self-improvement!

After seeing Psycho-Cybernetics recommended on multiple must-read lists, I knew I had to get it, and I’m so glad I did. This isn’t just a book you breeze through, it’s one that makes you pause, reflect, and truly absorb the concepts. I found myself slowing down often, not because it was difficult to read, but because it challenged me to think deeply about what I had just taken in. A thought-provoking and impactful read, indeed!

This book should be a must read in high schools everywhere. Essentially shows you how your mindset is limiting and it's belief is how successful you will be in life is only as far as our mind let's us. We live in a limited mindset world. This helps break free and get rid of your limited beliefs weighing you down. Setting you up for a wonderfully successful life if you just follow the book. I wish someone made me read this in my early 20s everyone should read this book. It's been rewritten to better understanding nowadays from a cosmetic surgeon's point of view. I absolutely suggest anyone read this.

Many years ago, I found the original edition of “Psycho-Cybernetics” by Maxwell Maltz, in a used bookstore. Back then, I read that book three times, because during each read, I became clearer about my life’s purpose, and about goals to support where I was in my life’s journey.

Now, in the summer of 2023, which is eight years after this current edition has been in circulation, I wondered if I would not only find answers to some compelling internal questions, I also wondered how different my experience would be in reading this edition.

First, because my original copy is being held together by a couple of rubber bands, it’s not easy to reread that copy – but, because I have many notes in every page of that seminal treasure, I’m keeping it.
With this new copy, a book that 8” by 5”, compared to 6 ¾’s by 4”, I have room to really capture details, as they occur to me.

Each chapter, except that last one, ends with a “Key Points to Remember” page, where Dr. Maltz, asks readers to write 5 key points, in their own words. The next page, “Your Case History,” Dr. Maltz asks readers to list an experience from their past that is explained by the principles in the chapter. I filled up all of the blank space in those chapter endings, because as I read this book I gained insight to questions, attributes, concerns and flaws that I wasn’t aware that I had.

Another interesting thought in reading this book, which was first published in 1960, is having read so many books on the Law of Attraction, which was a big topic in beginning of this decade, “Psycho-Cybernetics” was already teaching this in 1960, just under a different name.

Read this book if you are willing and ready to: be more present, create and honor your own self-image, and be influential in all aspects of your life.
