Editorial Reviews
From the Author
The odd thing about this story is that it is not a sequel -- that is, it doesn't pick up at the end of my first book. Rather, this story takes place within the time-frame of my first book, Way of the Peaceful Warrior, during a period of travel and exploration after Socrates sent me away to find myself and my place in the world. So literally, one can read my first book to about page 184, then read Sacred Journey, and then complete the first book to get a proper sense of chronology. I don't necessarily suggest that readers do this, but only want to place this story in its proper time and context.
As I write this note (in March of 2011), I am preparing to write the third book in the series, that does in fact follow, chronologically, from the end of Sacred Journey. More on that later...
In the meantime, I hope readers enjoy reading of my adventures with the woman I called Mama Chia, a Hawai'ian kahuna, a healer and sage, as I learn some fundamental secrets about who we are and where we're going.

About the author

Most people who've read Way of the Peaceful Warrior (or seen the movie) already know a few aspects of my life. And you may have seen the following bio at my website:
"Dan Millman, a former world champion athlete, gymnastics coach, martial arts instructor, and college professor, is author of Way of the Peaceful Warrior (adapted to film in 2006), and 16 other books read by millions of people in 29 languages. Dan teaches worldwide and has influenced people from all walks of life. The author and his wife, Joy, live in Brooklyn, NY. His most recent work includes The Hidden School, completing the 'peaceful warrior saga,' as well as an audio program, "The Complete Peaceful Warrior's Way," available through Audible.com.
Dan's website - peacefulwarrior.com - features his books, events, online courses, and life purpose guidance.
Personal note:
In my youth I focused on self-improvement, taking memory courses, speed reading; practicing martial arts and gymnastics. Then one day I realized that no matter how much I improved myself, only one person benefited — but if I could influence other people in a positive way, that made my life more meaningful and exciting.
I began teaching gymnastics, and elements from the martial arts — that soon shifted into the larger arena of personal growth. Today my work centers around writing and speaking. I've been fortunate to have the opportunity to intersect with many lives around the world.
Joy and I have been married for more than four decades and we continue to grow closer as we gain perspective and cultivate a sense of humor (about ourselves and one another). The years have gifted us with three daughters and four grandchildren.
I believe you'd find me a good (but not perfect) example of what I teach. I continue to practice, to learn, to serve as well as I can. I do my best to keep my head in the clouds but feet on the ground.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2019Where "Way of the Peaceful Warrior" opened my eyes (and quite widely, on many occasions), this sequel hit me deeper than I'd expected it to. I love this book so much, and the journey the story's hero, Dan Millman's avatar of the same name, takes with the wise guide Mama Chia, has been hard to shake. But that's a good thing, I don't want to shake it, and don't think I can. I was sad to finish this book, but happy to know the story goes even deeper with "The Hidden School."
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2013I may seem biased, but I really do love Dan Millman's books. They're wonderful, quick and easy reads, but at the same time they also convey a powerful message. I recommend his books any days. This is my second favorite book that he has written with my first being Journeys of Socrates. I purchased this book used and it came in remarkable condition, I would have never known it was used if I woudn't have looked under "used BOoks".
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2020Great follow up on the first book and much easier to read. Liked this best out of all Millman’a work. The tower of seven floors gave me great insight into some issues I had on how to make all flow and work together.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2015If you've read Dan's infamous book, Way of the Peaceful Warrior: A Book That Changes Lives, then you'll naturally progress to this book, which happens about 3/4ths of the way thru WOTPW. That being said, it doesn't have the same vibrant PUNCH that WOTPW does.
Don't get me wrong - I think this book is 100% worth reading, especially if you enjoy Dan's other books, but I don't think this is the most interesting book that he's written. If you don't know much about the chakras, or you're looking to understand them on a different level, he touches on some very interesting aspects that I hadn't contemplated (even after studying yoga for over a decade).
I'm glad that I read this book and I really enjoyed the lessons, but I recommend reading WOTPW first.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2013Dan Millman relates his story in a way that is interesting, easy to read and follow. Dan takes you on an adventure of his inner spiritual work that is easy to relate to, funny in places, sad in some and curious to know more in others. I enjoyed the book because it entertained me and kept me interested. It also had me thinking about his story and how I could learn more. At the end of the book Dan guides you to further study.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2019The peaceful warrior saga has been my favorite series to read, ever! The way Dan takes you into his mind is second to none. I only wish I could find more stories like this. I could not put these books down. I ordered all of Dan’s books.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2015All 3 books in this series by Dan Milman are filled with ideas and thoughts that make me stop, think and consider what I am doing in my life. They have a way of speaking to our very core and helping us recognise and wake up to who we really are. I loved them all. The sacred journey was beautiful, and written in the most lucid, simple and clear language too. A 'must read' indeed.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2013If you read the previous book and enjoyed it then you will love The Sacred Journey. Dan Millman takes his journey even deeper. The pace of the book is exceptional and I had a difficult time putting the book down. I normally dislike books and have a hard to getting into many, but this one is the exception.
If you like his stuff then you GOTTA CHECK OUT "The journey of Socrates" Phenomenal!

5.0 out of 5 stars Journey of inner revelation
As I was deeply fascinated by the first book, Way of the peaceful warrior, Sacred Journey was the obvious next step to take on my own path. Having lived in Hawaii myself, the story touched me in a way even the first book didn't manage to do. I could fully relate with Dan, at times it even felt like I was the protagonist myself. I want to thank the author and that "loving rounded woman" for all the wisdom, teachings and new perspective I gained on this fantastic journey. Mahalo! =)

5.0 out of 5 stars A continued journey in the life of Socrates, as written by Dan M
I've read all of Dan's books, they are modern, thoughtful, insightful and meaningful if you let them be.
However what I used to do was read, ruminate and then forget the lessons.
I no longer do that, I am re-reading all of Dan's materials and taking those "Ah hah" bits and implementing them.
Those "bits" I speak of will be the times you read and either get skin bumps or feelings of dejavu, those are the moments you stop and write down or record on your phone exactly what you are feeling, trust on that one it's very much the path of change!
Thank you to Dan for these great snippets of wisdom!
