Product Description
The Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt with Camelot Trim in Satin Nickel makes daily life simpler and more convenient. Enter an access code on the touch screen to unlock the door instead of searching your pockets for keys. Pair the lock with your smartphone over Bluetooth. Share access with trusted friends and family with just a few taps in the Schlage Sense app – no more keeping track of spare keys. The Schlage Sense lock is easy to install yourself in minutes. It’s battery operated so there’s no hardwiring required, and the lock will still accept access codes if the power goes out at home. Typical battery life with average use is about one year, and the low battery indicator reminds you weeks in advance to replace it. You can update the lock wirelessly through the app as new features are released, which means you never have to buy a new lock to take advantage of the latest capabilities. Add the Schlage Sense Wi-Fi Adapter (sold separately) to your home Wi-Fi network to lock/unlock from anywhere on Android smartphones, iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Or, if you have an iPad/Apple TV connected to your home Wi-Fi network, you can control the lock from your iPhone as part of your HomeKit-enabled smart home.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2016I bought this product because I wanted a secure but also keyless means of accessing my home. The integration with HomeKit was an added bonus.
I did my research before buying this smart lock. I had narrowed it down to this and the August Smart Lock. The August lock big selling point was that it would be totally invisible from the outside but the fact that I would have to buy separate hardware to allow coded entry and yet another additional piece of hardware to enable remote access from my iPhone were factors that made me go elsewhere. I chose Schlage for it's reputation as a lock manufacturer and the integration with Apple's HomeKit. Something to keep in mind is that the Schlage Sense is bluetooth only. It does not connect to your home WiFi network and therefor remote access requires an Apple TV 3rd Generation or newer. I already have an Apple TV and it's within 40 feet (bluetooth radio range) of the door.
Before I made my purchase, I downloaded the Schlage Sense App to my iPhone and watched the included installation video. I recommend that everyone considering getting this lock doing the same. The video runs you through checking and measuring your existing door to make sure that it will be compatible with the Schlage Sense. I found that my door met all the requirements and submitted my order through Amazon.
When the locked arrived, I opened it up and the packaging was very "Apple-like". Slide off the top of the box and the exterior keypad sits presented to you immediately. Underneath is the interior piece and all necessary hardware. Batteries are included!
You can immediately tell that this is a solid and well built piece of hardware. It has a strong feel and weight to it. There are some other designs and color options but I feel the Camelot Trim in satin nickel looks the best.
Installation was a breeze. The hardest part for me was removing the old lock. I couldn't get the exterior part of my old lock off even though I had removed all the screws and hardware. It turned out that it was being held on by the original paint on the door. A little tap with the blunt end of my screw driver and it fell right off. Needless to say, I felt a little dumb spending so much time trying to figure out what was wrong. Once the old lock was off, I followed the instructions in the video on my phone pausing it as I completed each step. The installation of the new lock took less than 10 minutes and I think anyone who can operate a screw driver should be able to do it. It's dead simple.
The software installation was even easier. I scanned the HomeKit code from the written manual into my phone using the Schlage app and it connected to the lock. I created a code and tested it out and crossed my fingers that I wouldn't lock myself out of the house. The code worked and I was also able to lock and unlock the door through the app. I then added a couple more codes and tested those out as well. The option that I appreciated the most is the auto-lock feature. You can set the lock to lock itself if left unlocked for a certain amount of time or turn this feature off. I chose to set it to 2 minutes. Now I no longer need to worry if I locked the door before I left the house. The lock will automatically lock and leave me with peace of mind.
The party trick is the HomeKit integration with Siri. If you have "Hey Siri" enabled on your iPhone, you can ask Siri to lock and unlock the door with just your voice. ("Hey Siri" requires the phone to be plugged into a power source on iPhone 6 and older. iPhone 6s can listen for "Hey Siri" commands without a power source connected.)
Now I can leave the keys in a draw and take my dog for one of his many daily walks. I can create codes for family and friends to come in and out of the house at any time. I can also create a code for the pet sitter so she can come and when we are away and I can limit her access to just the times when she will be required to access our home.
Above all of these great things is knowing that my home is secure and I have the ability to check the status of my home by just accessing my phone. The fact that this lock comes from a manufacturer that has a long reputation for building quality locks makes it even better.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2025I have 5 that have worked great for years. We only use the Apple connection and manual. Eventually I would like the modern version for the new proximity feature.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2016Installation was a breeze. Connected it to my iPhone which was running on 10.0.2, It did a quick firmware upgrade on the lock and everything has been working flawlessly after the first hiccup. I had some trouble initially for Apple homekit to find the lock. After the setup .. I went ahead and did a hard restart on my iPhone and also removed the power plugs from the lock to restart the lock. After the lock restart, My iphone was able to find the lock immediately.I also configured my iPad to enable remote access. The beauty is you can manage the lock completely from your iPhone. So you can add new access codes, delete them etc. The codes can be configured to work on certain days and certain times which is very useful if you need to give it to cleaners etc. The remote access is awesome too. My dad forgot his keys the other day and had trouble entering the code. I could remotely unlock the door sitting in my office 25 miles away which was pretty neat ;-). I also have the ring video door bell. So both this lock and ring door bell work really well together. When you are really lazy to answer the door bell, You can even ask Siri to unlock the door for you. From my experience Siri works very well too. This is a must have product for any Smart Home.. I like the fact that it does have a regular key to unlock the door if the batteries run out. They look really nice and well made too. I havent tried the Echo/Alexa integration yet but with IFTT support you should be able to do it. Asking Alexa to open my door would be pretty neat :-). From my research Schlage does not have a IFTT channel yet. I will update my review in case I hit any issues but its been a week and has worked flawlessly.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2016I've had this lock for about 3 months now and for the most part, I really like it but problematic remote access is the one it’s glaring deficiency – at least it is in my experience.
Installation is easy - as long as you follow the simple and straightforward directions. Since it’s only a lock you might be tempted to disregard the directions but as other reviews have mentioned, doing so may cause a large problem.
I find that the lock is responsive to both the mobile app and also when I speak a command into my Apple Watch (telling Siri to open the front door, for example), however as noted in other posts, you have to be in Bluetooth range. Punching a code into the keypad also works perfectly and using the mobile app you can assign up to 30 codes and set each to a different schedule (or no schedule) as you see fit. This is great for giving access to family members or anyone else who may need access to the house. Through the HomeKit settings on your phone or iPad, you can also set up access for other iOS users in the house so they can control the lock with their own app or with Siri.
The iOS app you install as part of the lock installation (follow those directions!) allows you to change many of the lock settings including autolock functions and adding/editing access codes for people. One thing to note however is that you have to be in Bluetooth range to access the lock settings. That means without an AppleTV you can’t add, edit or delete codes remotely (more on that below) but also, you can’t even see what the codes you’ve previously created are. For example, if you’re out of the house and someone asks you what their door code is, you won’t be able to tell them from looking that the app. This is somewhat annoying to say the least – and I really don’t like the fact that I can’t edit or delete a code, or change code access times remotely.
As far as the lock goes itself, it appears to be durable and has a nice fit and finish. I replaced a regular Schlage deadbolt with this and it was seamless. If you already have a Schlage lock and want to keep your key you will need to take it to a locksmith or otherwise rekey the new deadbolt as the product does not have ability to quickly set to a pre-existing key as some deadbolts have. This didn't bother me at all and to some extent makes me feel like the lock is at least slightly more safe for not having that feature (but I know very little about locks generally).
If it was just the lock and the app working in Bluetooth range, I would give this 4 or 5 stars. The problem is, that if you really want the benefits of remote access (which, I suspect one of the main reasons you would be interested in purchasing a high-tech lock like this) then you really need an AppleTV – and using the lock through AppleTV is awful.
After purchasing the lock, I decided that I would buy into the whole HomeKit thing and get an AppleTV that way I could really use the lock the way that I wanted (remotely). I was a little bummed that I needed the AppleTV to do that but I was okay with it because 1) I knew that I was going to need it before I purchased the lock; and 2) it gave me an excuse to buy an AppleTV which I kind of also wanted. I went and I purchased the newest AppleTV model (32gig) and set up my HomeKit settings so I could access the lock remotely…or so I thought.
The AppleTV is placed approximately 10-12 feet from the lock with no obstructions of any kind between them. I had wanted to put the AppleTV in another room but figured that to start off with, I’d play it safe and test the set up with the least amount of variables. The first time I tried to access the lock remotely on my iPhone 6s (over LTE) the app gave me a warning that accessing it remotely over the AppleTV might take a while. Boy did it. In fact, it took so long, I feel like it must of timed out several times because I had to keep trying it. Eventually I got it to work and the app told me the current status of the lock, the last time it was set and the method by which it was set (autolock, etc.). When I went into the lock’s settings to see if I could add, edit or delete access codes/times it took another agonizing amount of time. Each individual code took a while to load and I eventually gave up waiting for it so I didn’t even try to edit anything. Given my experience on LTE I decided I’d try it on Wi-Fi from my parents’ house – resigning myself that I’m generally around wi-fi so even if it didn’t work well over LTE, I could get it to work well most of the time. Inexplicably, it was even worse even though I was on a fast wi-fi connection. It took forever for the app to find the lock – it was just “searching for lock” for more time than I could stand. When it eventually found the lock, I couldn’t even get all the codes to load (each time it would load 4-6 out of the 10 I had programed)) so again, I didn’t even get a chance to try to edit any of the codes or access schedules.
Subsequently, I have tried to access the lock remotely several times over wi-fi and LTE. I always get mixed results but never any positive results. I can’t seem to find any rhyme or reason why sometimes it will work (although it still takes a while) and sometimes it doesn’t. All of my devices are updated to the latest versions. In short, remote access is just unreliable for me.
I’m REALLY hoping that this problem with remote access can get resolved with either updates to the lock’s firmware, the AppleTV or the iOS app (or all of them). If it can’t or doesn’t then, based on my experience so far, I think you have to think long and hard about getting this lock despite the fact that it appears to be a quality product and has many good features. If you just want it so you carry one less key with you, that’s one thing. If however, you really want remote access I think you probably should wait and see whether there are any updates or whether 2016 brings any new alternatives.
***Update 08/03/2016***
Since my original review there have been a few firmware updates for this lock as well as a few updates to iOS (currently 9.3.3) and I have noticed a significant improvement to the lock. Specifically, I have noticed that the lock is much more responsive to remote use. Its still not instant but the wait is now completely reasonable given what is going on. Normally I can access the lock remotely in just a few seconds and always less than a minute (although admittedly, even waiting seconds for the lock can feel like minutes psychology - but that's on me). I also have not had anymore issues where the app would not connect to the lock at all when accessing it remotely. All in all, I'm much more happy with the lock. There are a few more features - or lack of features that keep me from giving it 5 stars (such as option for notifications and integration with IFTTT) but overall I am now very happy with the purchase.
Note: In addition to the firmware/software updates that I mentioned above, I also moved my AppleTV downstairs, so now it is actually farther away from the lock. I'm not sure if this had any effect on the improvements I mentioned. On one hand I would expect remote access to work less well now being farther away and separated by a floor but I don't want to neglect that perhaps now there's less interference or something (although I think that's unlikely).

5.0 out of 5 stars All you need is a screwdriver
Bought one for my entrance, asked my dad to come over to help me.
Installation+instructions were so easy I didn’t even need his help. Literally just followed the instructions.
I’ve been so happy with it, I bought one for my garage too! You will not regret. (Unless you want one with proximity sensor, then ya, you’ll regret cuz this doesn’t have that feature)
Currently in use without wifi adapter. (I figured I’m an iphone/homekit user and siri, keypad, key would be sufficient)
I will/may update review if purchased.

1.0 out of 5 stars Battery died after 10 days!!!
The battery died after 10 days of use, which means my roommates would’ve been locked out of the house because they don’t have a key. Luckily one of them was at home to let the other one in when it happened. When the battery dies you can only replace it from the inside, so if you’re locked out and don’t have a physical key, you’re screwed. This is NOT ok to have as a risk every 10 days. The lock mechanism makes such a loud sound that people joke you’d think it’s for a top security gold vault. I really liked it at first and accepted the sound but this product shouldn’t even be on the market for the risk it poses of locking people out of their own house with no warning that the battery is running low. Very disappointed in this $300 purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cerradura Electronica

Because this lock has HomeKit built in, you don’t need any additional wifi modules like other similarly priced locks.
On the downside, the lock motor is quite noisy
