About the author

John Sonmez is a software developer and the author of two best-selling books, The Complete Software Developer's Career Guide and Soft Skills: The Software Developer's Life Manual.
He's also the founder of the Simple Programmer blog and YouTube channel, where he reaches 1.4 million software developers yearly with a central message:
Technical skills alone aren't enough for a successful career—or life.
By focusing on "soft skills" like the ability to communicate clearly and lead by example, the mental resilience to bounce back from failure and even an improved level of personal fitness, software developers can break through the "glass ceiling" and enjoy extraordinary success.
John learned these lessons himself the hard way—through trial and error over his 17+ year career as a developer—and he's candid about the fits and starts he struggled through during those early years.
John started his software development career at age 10, hacking C and C++ to create virtual worlds for his favorite MUDs.
When John landed a coveted six-figure Silicon Beach job at age 19, he thought his career was set.
In reality he was only set up for years of frustration and disappointment—from getting "laid off" from that cushy job after underwhelming his boss with his C++ skills, to a spectacular implosion during an intense onsite interview with Microsoft, to finally taking a job outside of programming just to pay the bills.
Eventually though John realized that there's a huge difference between knowing how to program and having all the skills to be a successful, professional software developer—and he set out to develop the technical, leadership and communication skills he lacked.
John went on to become a highly paid consultant in test automation and Agile methodology, and the 55 courses he published with the technical education powerhouse PluralSight makes him one of the most prolific online trainers in the field of software development.
John effectively retired at 32 and moved to San Diego.
Today he focuses his energy on helping other developers achieve the success they desire through the videos, books and courses in his Simple Programmer platform.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2018I’ve been a liatener of John Sonmez for quite sometime. A lot sumilar advice in this book can be found in his blogs and videos but this books helps really drive it all home in one package. I think this book has more value as a single unit. It teally puts things in perspective. Some of the other reviews complain about the f word but I think it’s great because John’s personality really junps out of the pages. As a 8 year army veteran, I didn’t understand why my drill sergeants cursed but later I understood why. It really gets your attention and keeps you on your feet. This is not a book all nice and pretty things you ahould hear it’s about getting your attention to stop being lazy and becoming a effing bulldog! It defibtely gets the job done. I love it and I’m getting on my A game! Now go show him your war face!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2022This is more a pamphlet then a book with the usual information that can be found elsewhere.
I recommend it for young readers if this is your first self help book on fighting procrastination.
You can finish the book in one evening.
Self promotion and promotions are present in the book but it's not as bad as others.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2023It's easy to get lost jn the way from time to time. This book reminded me of some of the things to look out for when in a rut.
A good read recommended for anyone who wants to keep it up.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2019This book inspired me to stop being lazy and move forward with my own goals, I am sure that down the road i may be tempted to go back to my old lazy self, but not today, and not tomorrow as I am empowered by the advice from this book.
Read time is about 60 minutes so my own advice is read it and judge it yourself, then set your own goals and challenge your old self to never stop moving forward.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2018Nice short book on how to get off the couch and start doing things and start thinking differently. But could have been much better book with better usage of language and better ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2018This book will not only help you overcome laziness, it will make you rethink your goals and make you strive for more. The best thing about it is that short, so it can be read and reread many times. If the advice is actually followed, then you will literally change your life.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2018Quite a good little book for flaming the coals of my aspirations. A little repetitive. I like his other book "The Software Developers Career Guide"as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2019I don't read books but want to start reading books. I also want to become more productive. This book is short, simple, and to the point with good advice. I'm glad I read it and I'm motivated to read more and do more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read!
It was a fast and motivating read. I also like the resources and quiz included that helps to evaluate our level of bulldog mindset so we know on what to work to better ourselves.
Good job on the book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Short and sweet
This is not a long book which means you can read the whole thing in less than an hour. It’s direct and to the point and, I think, inspiring and action-provoking. Cheers John!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for people who want to change from a lazy person to a bulldog
I've always been a massive fan of John Sonmez, one of the only guys who gives you GOOD advice without trying to sell you some bullshit $2000 course on how to become successful. I believe John wants to make a positive impact, and his videos are great evidence of that. This book was a great quick read, I think ANYONE who implements ALL the concepts in these books should see results. As a follower of his I already follow these tips on a daily basis, and it definitely has improved my life. One recommendation though, on the chapter 10 John talks about becoming a finisher. I think expanding on breaking down tasks would of really been beneficial as it was very short, with an example. Overall great book highly recommend it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good motivator, but not always realistic
If you've been following John's videos and blog posts, this is nothing new. It mostly looks like a way to build a mailing list of interested people who don't know John, but for a regular follower, definitely not worth more than the reduced price of 99 cents.
