The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life Hardcover – September 13, 2016

#1 New York Times Bestseller • More than 10 million Copies Sold
In this generation-defining self-help guide, a superstar blogger cuts through the crap to show us how to stop trying to be "positive" all the time so that we can truly become better, happier people.
For decades, we’ve been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F**k positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let’s be honest, shit is f**ked and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn’t sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is—a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is his antidote to the coddling, let’s-all-feel-good mindset that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.
Manson makes the argument, backed both by academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but on learning to stomach lemons better. Human beings are flawed and limited—"not everybody can be extraordinary, there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault." Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them. Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties, once we stop running and avoiding and start confronting painful truths, we can begin to find the courage, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, curiosity, and forgiveness we seek.
There are only so many things we can give a f**k about so we need to figure out which ones really matter, Manson makes clear. While money is nice, caring about what you do with your life is better, because true wealth is about experience. A much-needed grab-you-by-the-shoulders-and-look-you-in-the-eye moment of real-talk, filled with entertaining stories and profane, ruthless humor, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is a refreshing slap for a generation to help them lead contented, grounded lives.

Review
“Resilience, happiness and freedom come from knowing what to care about--and most importantly, what not to care about. This is a masterful, philosophical and practical book that will give readers the wisdom to be able to do just that.” — Ryan Holiday, New York Times bestselling author of The Obstacle is the Way and Ego is the Enemy
“Mark’s ability to dig deep and offer amazing, yet counter-intuitive, insight into the challenges of life makes him one of my favorite writers, and this book is his best work yet.” — Matt Kepnes, New York Times bestselling author of Travel the World on $50 a Day: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Smarter
“This book hits you like a much-needed slap in the face from your best friend: hilarious, vulgar, and immensely thought-provoking. Only read if you’re willing to set aside all excuses and take an active role in living a f***ing better life.” — Steve Kamb, bestselling author of Level Up Your Life and founder of NerdFitness.com
“The opposite of every other book. Don’t try. Give up. Be wrong. Lower your standards. Stop believing in yourself. Follow the pain. Each point is profoundly true, useful, and more powerful than the usual positivity. Succinct but surprisingly deep, I read it in one night.” — Derek Sivers, Founder of CD Baby and author of Anything You Want: 40 Lessons for a New Kind of Entrepreneur
“An in-your-face guide to living with integrity and finding happiness in sometimes-painful places… This book, full of counterintuitive suggestions that often make great sense, is a pleasure to read and worthy of rereading. A good yardstick by which self-improvement books should be measured.” — Kirkus Reviews

In this generation-defining self-help guide, a superstar blogger shows us that the key to being happier is to stop trying to be "positive" all the time and instead to become better at handling adversity.
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life.
But those days are over. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest; sometimes things are f*cked up and we have to live with it." For the past few years, Manson--via his wildly popular blog--has been working on correcting our delusional expectations for ourselves and for the world. He now brings his hard-fought wisdom to this groundbreaking book.
Manson makes the argument--backed by both academic research and well-timed poop jokes--that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but on learning to better stomach lemons. Human beings are flawed and limited--as he writes, "Not everybody can be extraordinary--there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault." Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them. This, he says, is the real source of empowerment. Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties--once we stop running from and avoiding, and start confronting painful truths--we can begin to find the courage and confidence we desperately seek.
"In life, we have a limited amount of f*cks to give. So you must choose your f*cks wisely." Manson brings a much-needed grab-you-by-the-shoulders moment of real-talk, filled with entertaining stories and profane, ruthless humor. This manifesto is a refreshing slap in the face for all of us so that we can start to lead more contented, grounded lives.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2025I picked this one up for the Barnes & Noble weekly challenge (Week 1: Meditative), and while it’s not traditionally shelved as a meditative book, I’d argue that it absolutely fits the bill. Manson weaves in a surprising amount of Buddhist philosophy and introspective thinking, making it a perfect guide for anyone looking to reset their mindset and cut through the noise.
📝 Why It Hit Home:
🧘♂️ Protecting Your Peace – Despite the in-your-face title, this book is really about choosing what you care about wisely, prioritizing honesty over fake politeness, and letting go of the small stuff.
💬 Brutal Honesty – It’s a refreshing reminder that we don’t need to sugarcoat our feelings or pretend to care about things that don’t matter. It’s about finding your priorities and sticking to them, unapologetically.
🤣 Darkly Funny – Manson’s blunt, irreverent style had me laughing out loud more than once, and the lessons stick because of it.
💌 Final Take: I’d love to send this book to a few people who could really use the message, but that would be giving a f*ck, and this book just taught me not to do that.
💬 Have you read this one? Did it change how you look at your priorities?

- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2025The words of this book are a slap to the face and a kick in the rear end that we ALL need to hear! This should be eye-opening for the youth and young adults of today, and even for those who are still a little lost in their 30s and 40s. Please take the time to read and embrace this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2025Pg.112 talks about "our democracy" and "democratic values". AMERICA IS A REPUBLIC!!! IT'S NOT A DEMOCRACY!!! democracy literally means majority rules, screw the minority. Doesn't have to be more than half either. Just has to be the most. I could have one of 4 groups and if I had 26% we would become the ruling class over the other 74% as long as they stayed divided. We would also become the makers of law and anything else we wanted to do or change IF we were truly a democracy. We are a constitutional Republic and therefore Republicans! Wether you agree or not that is the truth. Our Constitution insures that we all have certain rights and they can't be taken away with or without a popular vote. We are in no way a democracy and the only reason people think we are is because people keep saying it to undermine our Republic and our Constitution which also undermines our rights as citizens of this Republic (ie. Republicans). Ironically when the author says it he also talks about being skeptical of the media and news. So many people believe we are a democracy for that very reason. I'm just here to set the record straight for whatever good it might do. With that said it is a decent book and it did help me to see things from a different perspective and perspective is infact everything. I would still recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2025Mark, the way you simplify what I've been struggling to understand, for years now is priceless.
I already feel more confident and peaceful about my future ❤️😊❤️
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2025This book was a great read—straightforward, bold, and incredibly eye-opening. - Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2025I’ve always thought my way of thinking was correct, then again, don’t we all? This book honestly makes you think about the way you think about things. It gives you a different perspective of how others view things you think are important. I suppose it’s all about priorities and what matters to you. I’m not much of a self help reader but I thought I’d give it a try. Very informative.

She asked for this book and has read this book already and loves the info and advice inside. I love to see her succeed and am very happy to buy her books! She usually gets a lot of books like this for Christmas and her Birthday. Awesome!!!
