- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2015I read part one, “Counterterrorism History: Then and Now”, from the book Counterterrorism and Cybersecurity: Total information Awareness and I found the information interesting. The first part of the book focuses on the events of 9/11 and how they affected different people and organizations in all parts of the world. The book’s information and point of view stems from the author, Newton Lee’s life and experiences. He accounts his thoughts on the day of the 9/11 attack and discusses different organizations and companies that he has worked for, or has been in contact with, and how they reacted to the events.
I found Mr. Lee’s point of view fascinating, as it is different from mine. I was too young to really know what went on during 9/11 and my mother sheltered me from the entire situation. I never found out about what happened on 9/11 until many years later, in high school. I think that seeing someone else’s first-hand experience and their thought processes, having lived through the events, is rather eye opening.
Most of the first part of the book focuses on how the company, Disney, responded to the attacks on the twin towers because Newton Lee was working for them during the time of the attacks. Obviously, Disney is a large, internationally famous company who should be concerned about terrorists trying to attack them (especially with the terrorist threat on Hollywood that occurred shortly after 9/11), but Newton Lee poses an insider viewpoint on how the company responded to the event. He provides letters that were written to different employees working in different parts of the Disney franchise. Seeing how quickly and sympathetically, higher ups addressed their workers and declared their understanding of the situation is heartwarming. At the same time looking at how Disney locations responded physically to the attacks shows that Disney, as a company, respects America and banded together to show that in a calm and mannerly fashion.
The thing I liked most about the fact that Newton chose to discuss Disney in depth is that I never think about Disney when I think about the 9/11 attacks. I automatically think of what the government did and how they responded, what the airlines did and what the city of New York did. It is refreshing and eye opening to see what a private, but very public company did to show their support and respect for the nation in its time of need.
Overall this book is very informative and thought-provoking. It poses new point of views for highly controversial information that everyone may or may not be familiar with. It highlights important issues in current culture and links them to other important issues that might not necessarily be linked together, like Disney and 9/11. Newton Lee’s perspective on cybersecurity and counterterrorism is refreshing and thorough. This book is good for people who want to learn about cybersecurity and counterterrorism, who already know about it and want to learn more, or want a complete source to use for research.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2015Newton Lee takes on the challenge of informing readers about the necessary information needed for cyber security and counterterrorism. This book mentions some of the more popular shows and movies in hollywood. He writes about the popular TV shows, Hollywood movies, and technology in todays society. There are many interesting things in this book that is fairly relevant and informative about today’s society. I particularly enjoyed the way Lee talked about the movie called “This Means War”. One of the more popular movie releases in the year 2012. It’s an American romantic comedy spy film. The film stars Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy. All three of the main characters are victims of a very complicated love triangle. Two CIA agents who have been best friends for many years fall in love with the same woman. Both characters decide to not tell the woman that they know each other. The woman, Reese Witherspoon has no idea that these two attractive guys are CIA agents. She ends up dating both of the guys on separate days. The CIA agents decide to break the rules and use CIA technology for their own personal use. This is extremely dangerous because I am sure that many higher ranked individuals with power do this today in our society. It’s not fair for the public to be spied on without a very good reason. It’s interesting how movies portray these type of incidents in their hollywood blockbuster films. The film is supposed to be a romantic comedy but an engaged viewer cannot deny the obvious. There is more and more of this happening in the world today. Individuals feel that they are above the law and they tend to take action. They tend to abuse the powers that are given to them. The bottom line is that security is no longer up to date. Most individuals with higher power feel that they are above the law and that they can just about do whatever pleases them. Cyber security is everyone’s responsibility. Everything is a two way street and we must acknowledge that. Illegal spying occurs more and more in the modern era of technology. These days, a threat online is similar to a threat in real life and should be dealt with in the appropriate manner. Peaceful solutions must be reached and i think that this will allow a positive difference in the world of security. Lee goes on and talks about many other hollywood films in today’s society that do the same exact thing. There are examples all around us in theaters, television, article...etc but we choose to “just go with it” as if it’s just another movie or television series. Overall, there is plenty of information in this book. It’s difficult to point out all of them because there is just so many different points being made. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the effects of technology and media. Cyber security is a real thing and should be talked about.
